Simi Boys U12 Army Ants concluded their season on the weekend of June 9-10 at the San Fernando Mission Classic at Balboa Park.  Overall, the boys participated in the five tournaments:  Carpinteria Beach Cup, Moorpark Apricot Jam, Santa Clarita Showdown, Oxnards Sports Festival, and San Fernando Mission Classic.  They medaled in four of the five tournaments they entered, with Carpinteria the lone exception.  The Army Ants placed 4th at both the Moorpark Apricot Jam and Oxnard Sports Festival, 3rd at the San Fernando Mission Classic, and 2nd at the Santa Clarita Showdown.  The boys really came together as a team and had a good time competing.  The primary scoring was provided by Juan Ramirez, Curtis Hixon, Josh Reano, and Kenny Dougherty.  Their opportunities were created by the strong mid-field play of Erik Cisneros, Adam Sampson, Chris Herrera (who broke his leg in the medal game of the Oxnard Sports Festival), and Brandon Esswein.  The Army Ants had a strong defense led by Kevin Habroun, Victor Mondragon, Alan Matthews, and goalkeeper Clint Smith.  The team was coached by Cesar Herrera and Chuck Filkins.  Thanks to all of the boys and their parents for a great tournament season.  A special thank you to the volunteers who provided referee crews for our tournaments: Ray Dion, Leonard Hendricks, Ken Crowle, Matt and Ryan Matter, Greg Kocis, and Larry Mohr.

Double Trouble – Girls U12

Double Trouble almost made it to a medal round at the Oxnard Sports Festival on May 5th & 6th.  After a well played 3-0 win over Malibu Rip Tide Saturday morning, the team tied Santa Barbara United 1-1 in the afternoon.  Simi led most of the match 1-0.  Sunday’s match was a battle with Valencia Woosh.  Valencia was up 1-0 for most of the match but the Simi scored in the 3rd quarter to tie the match at 1-1.  The pool was so close, 1st and 2nd needed to be decided by a coin toss.
Valencia
Woosh:  19 points (1 win, 2 ties) won the coin toss to go the 1st & 2nd place match
Santa Barbara
United:  19 points (1 win, 2 ties) lost the coin toss and went to the 3rd & 4th place match
Simi Valley
Double Trouble:  18 points (1 win, 2 ties)
Malibu
Rip Tide:  0 points (3 losses)

The Santa Clarita Valley Showdown on April 28th & 29th was a tough weekend for Double Trouble.  A slow start on Saturday morning ended in a 1-1 tie with Malibu Rip Tide.  The heat on Saturday afternoon provided a tough match for the girls fielding only 9 players.  With no substitutions, the team ran out of fuel and lost to Woodland Hills Les Filles 4-0.  Sunday had the team in full strength but still couldn’t muster enough team play and Simi lost to Valencia Woosh 3-0.

The Pasadena Spring Break Tournament on March 31st & April 1st (playing 11 vs. 11) started to bring out the potential and skills the girls have.  Playing flat in the 1st half against Granada Hills, Double Trouble still managed to hold them scoreless at 0-0 for the 1st half.  Granada Hills came back strong in the 2nd half and the Double Trouble lost 4-0.  With a very animated talk from the coaches after the game, the girls came back strong in the afternoon and beat Pasadena 2-1.  Sunday’s match against a seasoned Castaic Strikers team had Double Trouble leading 1-0 in the 1st half.  Castaic battled back and Simi lost 3-1.

Rancho Cucamonga ’s Grape Stomp Tournament on March 17th & 18th (playing 11 vs. 11) was the first outing for the girls playing together since rebuilding the team from the Area All-Stars Tournament in January.  After a tough 4-0 loss to an experienced Moreno Valley team Saturday morning, Double Trouble won the 2-1 in the afternoon match holding off the hard charging Saugus Sparks.  Sunday’s match had the team battling a good passing and corner kicking team from Torrance and lost 5-0.
