Referee Information

Training

The Dao of Refereeing:

Referee training is broken into multiple categories.  Referee for those that want to do only the youngest players  - U6 and U8.  Regional training  qualifies you to officiate U10 and higher. Those that take the Regional clinic may do the younger players if they wish, but you may not do the higher divisions with just the U6 or U8 training.  Assistant Referees support the center referee from the sidelines.  After you have a few games behind you  as a Regional Referee, upgrades are available to Intermediate, Advanced and National levels. The minimum age for a referee is 10 years old to do the U6/U8 games and 12 years old to do the U10 games.

Volunteer Forms:
All new and returning referees must complete a volunteer form. We strongly encourage you to do this prior to the clinic and bring three copies. This ensures the accuracy of the information you provide and speeds up the process since only a CVPA (Child Volunteer Protection Advocate) can accept the forms. If you take the Safe Haven course online, you will need an eAYSO id anyway.

Referee Upgrade Clinics:

Area 11-L is proud to sponsor referee upgrade classes July 25-27, 2008 at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, CA.

Classes will include Basic Referee, Intermediate Referee, Advanced Referee and National Referee.

After attending the upgrade courses, candidates should work with experienced mentors to complete their certification.   We have recruited some of the top Instructors in Southern California for these classes. In addition, students will be treated to the now famous Area 11-L hot lunches ;-)

As you all know, the referee pyramid is very wide at the bottom (Regional Referee), but progressively narrower towards the top (Intermediate, Advanced and National Referee). The more we can improve the level and caliber of our referees, the better will be the playing experience for the kids in AYSO.

Note: Other regions also offer referee clinics and volunteers are encouraged to take a course in an adjacent region.  Follow the Area E Calendar Link and make sure you let us know that you are taking the course.
